A Week's Journey

Welcome to this week's edmradyo recap! 

On Monday, we celebrated our partnership with the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF), a dedicated organisation making tremendous progress in bridging the literacy gap faced by Indigenous children in remote areas. ILF's impact is profound, having provided over 700,000 culturally appropriate books, sparking a passion for reading and learning among countless children and empowering educators. Together, we're making a difference in the lives of Indigenous youth.

On Tuesday we highlighted the release of the Warlpiri Encyclopaedic Dictionary, a linguistic treasure documenting the intricacies of the Warlpiri language for future generations. With 1400 pages of translations, cultural insights, and illustrations, this dictionary is a testament to preserving and sharing the rich heritage of the Warlpiri people.

Wednesday was all about our little adventurers! We showcased our Kid’s range - even the tiniest tots should be able to express themselves through fun and functional clothing adorned with authentic Aboriginal artwork! Combining comfort and style, our Kids' range encourages children to embrace their individuality.

On Thursday we introduced you to the talented Kiya, a Menang/Gnudju artist whose designs are featured all across edmradyo’s range. We highlighted the many facets of Kiya’s career. From murals to co-creating the first-ever Indigenous doll on Playschool, she's now expanding her repertoire with two lines of stunning earrings, each piece imbued with her spiritual and ancestral connection to Boodjah.

Friday marked National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day - An important occasion to reflect on the challenges faced by Indigenous children and the essential work needed to create a brighter future for them - This year’s theme is ‘Little Voices, Loud Futures’.

While many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children are thriving in their secure cultural environments, a significant number continue to confront the enduring effects of colonisation. These challenges include discrimination, poverty, systemic racism, intergenerational trauma, and disconnection from land and culture.

edmradyo is deeply committed to supporting Indigenous communities and promoting positive change. National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children's Day serves as a poignant reminder of the work that still needs to be done to ensure every child has the opportunity to flourish and succeed.

We also delved into the history of NAIDOC Week posters, showcasing the creativity of Indigenous artists and the inspiration behind their designs. Each poster is a testament to the enduring spirit of Indigenous culture and identity. Be sure to check out the blog if you missed it!

Saturday presented an invitation to join 'Aboriginal Story Time For Everyone’ at Inala library. This special storytime fosters early learning, cultural education, and respect for different cultures. 'Aboriginal Story Time For Everyone' is an inclusive event, welcoming everyone, regardless of background or age.
